Institutions that use the 5-point scale

The 5.0 CGPA scale is the most common grading system across Nigerian universities. Federal universities like UNILAG, UNN, UNIBEN, ABU, OAU, BUK, UNICAL, FUTA, FUT Minna and FUOYE all use it. State universities including LASU, COOU, EBSU, KSU, LAUTECH and AAUA follow the same scale. Private universities such as Covenant, Babcock, Bowen, Bingham, Madonna, Caleb, Afe Babalola, Lead City and Crawford also use the 5.0 scale. Even newer federal universities established in the last decade (FUOYE, FU Wukari, FU Kashere, FU Lokoja, FU Dutse, FU Dutsin-Ma, FU Lafia, FU Birnin Kebbi, FU Gusau, FU Otuoke, FU Gashua, FU Ndufu-Alike, FU Oye-Ekiti) inherit this scale through NUC accreditation. If you are unsure which scale your university uses, the 5.0 calculator is the safe default — only the University of Ibadan publicly uses the 7.0 variant.

Grade conversion

On the 5.0 Nigerian university scale: A (70–100) = 5 grade points, B (60–69) = 4, C (50–59) = 3, D (45–49) = 2, E (40–44) = 1, F (0–39) = 0. Your CGPA is the sum of (grade points × credit units) across every course you have taken, divided by the total credit units. A First Class is awarded for CGPA ≥ 4.50; Second Class Upper for 3.50–4.49; Second Class Lower for 2.40–3.49; Third Class for 1.50–2.39; Pass for 1.00–1.49. Below 1.00 typically triggers academic withdrawal review.

Carry-over rules

On the 5.0 scale, a grade of F (below 40) triggers a carry-over. The course must be repeated at the next available offering. Most universities allow the repeat grade to override the original failure for CGPA computation, but consult your departmental handbook — some institutions cap how often a course can be retaken.
