About UNIBEN CGPA
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) operates a 5.0 CGPA scale. UNIBEN has a famously rigorous medical school and engineering faculty, where CA contributes 40 percent of the final mark in most clinical and laboratory-intensive courses.
How UNIBEN Grades Courses
UNIBEN uses the standard Nigerian 5-point scale: A=5 (70+), B=4 (60–69), C=3 (50–59), D=2 (45–49), E=1 (40–44), F=0 (below 40). Pass grades are A through E. CGPA is calculated as the sum of (grade points × credit units) divided by the sum of credit units, across all semesters registered.
Carry-Over Rules at UNIBEN
UNIBEN treats an F as a carry-over. Failed core courses must be repeated and the new grade overrides the failure for CGPA purposes. Students with a CGPA below 1.0 are placed on probation; sustained failure leads to dismissal per UNIBEN senate regulation.
UNIBEN Classification Bands
- First Class / Distinction: 4.50 and above
- Second Class Upper / Upper Credit: 3.50 – 4.49
- Second Class Lower / Lower Credit: 2.40 – 3.49
- Third Class / Pass: 1.50 – 2.39
- Pass: 1.00 – 1.49
