Institutions that use the 4-point scale

The NBTE 4.0 polytechnic scale is used by every accredited Nigerian polytechnic. This includes YABATECH, LASPOTECH, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Auchi Polytechnic, Kaduna Polytechnic, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, as well as Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Federal Polytechnic Bida, Federal Polytechnic Idah, Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Federal Polytechnic Bali, and state polytechnics including Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Osun State Polytechnic, Abia State Polytechnic, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Niger State Polytechnic, and the various private polytechnics. The grading regulation is set by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and applies uniformly to ND, HND and the Advanced National Diploma programmes.

Grade conversion

The NBTE 4.0 polytechnic scale uses intermediate grades: A (75+) = 4.00, AB (70–74) = 3.50, B (65–69) = 3.25, BC (60–64) = 3.00, C (55–59) = 2.75, CD (50–54) = 2.50, D (45–49) = 2.00, E (40–44) = 1.50, F (below 40) = 0. Classification at graduation: Distinction ≥ 3.50, Upper Credit 3.00–3.49, Lower Credit 2.00–2.99, Pass 1.00–1.99. SIWES is required and graded separately for ND students.

Carry-over rules

NBTE polytechnic rules require failed compulsory courses to be repeated when next offered. The higher of the two attempts is used for CGPA. Carry-overs must be cleared before HND admission for ND graduates and before final-year project supervision for HND finalists.
