About MTH 101 at AIFPU
MTH 101 (or its institution-specific code — MAT 101, MAS 101, MTS 101) covers elementary mathematics: real number system, indices, logarithms, surds, quadratic and polynomial functions, sequences and series, binomial expansion, trigonometric identities, and an introduction to coordinate geometry. It is one of the most failed courses in Nigerian universities — not because it is conceptually difficult, but because students under-practise. Algebra and trigonometry reward repetition. Past questions at MTH 101 level reuse the same problem types every semester with different numbers, so students who drill 30–50 past questions before the exam consistently pass with a B or A. The course is examined over 2–3 hours with 5–6 questions to be attempted from a paper of 6–8. The strongest revision strategy is to identify the 8–10 problem archetypes (e.g., solve a quadratic by completing the square, prove a trigonometric identity, find the sum of a geometric series) and drill each archetype until the steps are automatic. Lecturers commonly include one challenging question per paper to stretch the top students — but the bulk of the paper is standard.
