Institutions that use the 7-point scale
The 7-point CGPA scale is uncommon in Nigeria but is the official undergraduate grading scale at the University of Ibadan (UI). A handful of UI-affiliated postgraduate programmes also use variants of this scale. If your transcript lists 7 as the maximum grade-point value rather than 5 or 4, this is the calculator to use. If you are unsure, check the back of your statement of result or your departmental student handbook — the maximum grade-point per course will be stated explicitly. For most other Nigerian universities, the 5.0 scale applies instead.
Grade conversion
On the 7.0 scale: A (70+) = 7 grade points, B (60–69) = 6, C (50–59) = 5, D (45–49) = 4, E (40–44) = 3, F (below 40) = 0. CGPA is computed as the weighted average across all credit units. Classification bands on the 7-point scale: First Class ≥ 6.00; Second Class Upper 4.60–5.99; Second Class Lower 2.60–4.59; Third Class 1.60–2.59; Pass 1.00–1.59.
Carry-over rules
Failed courses (F grade) must be re-sat. On the UI 7-point scale, departmental policy requires students to clear outstanding carry-overs before final-year project supervision is approved. Two consecutive semesters below a 1.5 CGPA places a student on academic probation.
